"Mr Hawkesworth's marriage with Miss Mollar, sister of the late Andrew Mollar, Esq., a worthy member of the Moravian Church, brought Mr Hawkeworth in close connection with the United Brethren; and about the beginning fo the year 1782 he withdrew from the Connexion of his kind and noble patroness, and joined the Moravian Church. The change greatly distressed the venerable Countess (of Huntington), who foresaw in the circumstance the departure of his ministerial usefulness. Her Ladyship deeply felt this trial, and made several ineffectual efforts to induce him to retrace the steps he had taken. On his return to England he settled in Wem, in Shrophire, where he had formerly laboured in the chapel built by Mr. Henshaw, and supplied for many years by the students from Trevecca. After some time he removed to Fulneck, in Yorkshire, and from thence to London. Whilst there he withdrew from the Church of the United Brethren, and retired to Horsley, in Gloucestershire, where he ended his days in peace, in the year 1810."

In 'The Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion: a sect in action' by Alan Harding it is stated that:

"Adams's path to ordination had been exceptionally difficult, but he was not the only student to experience significant problems. Another was John Hawkesworth, who went to serve the Connexional chapel in Plunkett Street, Dublin, in April 1772. Lady Huntingdon agreed in October 1773 to his being ordained, though no moves were made on this, and she appears to have had some fear of losing Hawkesworth to the Dublin congregration once he was actually ordained to them. When he did finally achieve ordination in September 1774, it was to the Dublin congregation, but not in Dublin: the Irish Dissenting ministers, he warned Lady Huntingdon, were so hostile to the Connexion that they would not agree to do it, and he had to come over to Plymouth to be ordained by the Dissenter Andrew Kinsman at his Tabernacle there."

This would mean the Reverend John Hawksworth (Hawkesworth) was likely to be in his mid-twenties when ordained. Although we cannot prove any of the following at the moment it is possible that John Hawksworth's father was Joshua (see familysearch.org). This would give a Christening date for John as 25 MAR 1748 at Silkstone, Yorkshire, England. [Update: An unquoted source on familysearch.org says John Hawksworth was born around 1757 which means we haven't found his Christening after all.]

A promising lead on the National Archive shows:

Further deeds to Kidcroft and New Ing and possibly other closes, some of which belonged to Hugh Walker. The property came to the Rev. John Hawkesworth and was acquired by John Shaw of Attercliffe, surgeon, who sold it to Jonas Clarke in 1800. The bundle includes abstract of title of the Rev. John Hawkesworth of estates to be sold to John Shaw and plan and survey of the closes sold in wills of Hugh Walker an John Hawkesworth (in abstract); receipts for Barnsley Free Grammar School. CR 527 links Joshua with the Rev John Hawksworth via John Shaw:

Title deeds to a messuage and closes called Near and Far closes in Silkstone, purchased in 1846 in two parts by Mrs. Sarah Anne Clarke from Samuel Shaw and mortgagees for £800; and Joseph Shaw and mortgagees for £400. The property belonged in 1760 to Joshua Hawksworth of Silkstoneand subsequently passed to the Shaws.

In the churchyard of All Saints and St James the Great in Silkstone there is a raised grave slab, it states:

3rd October 1736 aged 46 years. The right panel to: Joshua Hawksworth Senr
of silkstone, "Yeoman d. 14th April 1762 aged 73 years. A further inscription
to Rebekah wife of the said Joshua Hawksworth d. 7th February 1763 aged 70
years. Further inscriptinns of 1803 and 1818.

In fact there are two raised grave slabs next to each other at All Saints in Silkstone relating to the Hawksworth family.

Hopefully one day we will be able to prove that this is indeed the correct family of John Hawksworth. However, it is now clear that the correct surname is Hawksworth even if John Hawksworth was known to friends and family as Hawkesworth.

We had previously listed Richard Symonds Joynes (1780-1846) and his descendants with a good deal of confidence. However we ran into problems with his father James Leigh Joynes who was a prominent business man in Gravesend in the late 1700s. The IGI records on familysearch.org list a James Leigh Joynes being christened in 1738 at Saint Peter And Saint Paul, Milton By Gravesend, Kent and another in 1746 at the same church and of the same parents. But there is only one recorded death of a James Leigh Joynes during that period and that was in 1802.

Logic suggests that the first James died prior to 1746 and that it was the second one who died in 1802 but without proof we don't want to put (more) errors into this genealogy. So we've added James Leigh Joynes but without a date of birth until such time as we can prove our theory.

By adding James Leigh Joynes we've been able to finally add his father, Joseph Joynes, to our records. Hopefully one day we'll receive more information on the Joynes family of Kent.

A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland, Volume 2 by Sir Bernard Burke states:

Maria Möller, b. 1760; d. 30 June 1821: m. the Rev John Hawkesworth, of Silkstone Castle, Yorkshire, who on the death of his relative Sir John Hawkesworth, Bart. of Hawkesworth Park, had claims as next heir.

Ellen-Maria Möller, m. Rev. J. Hawkesworth, rector of Woore, son fo the late Rev. J. Hawkesworth, of Silkstone Castle, Yorkshire.

However the Rev. J. Hawkesworth, rector of Woore, surname is recorded as Hawksworth on his christening and census returns.

To add to the confusion even Google struggles to find a "Hawkesworth Park". Whilst it would be easily to correct Hawkesworth for Hawksworth other evidence seems to suggest that Hawkesworth is correct in respect to John Hawkesworth of Silkstone; we've been unable to find a "Silkstone Castle".

As a result we've split the spelling between both John's until we can come up with a more definite answer.

If anyone can shed any light into this we would be most grateful to hear from you.

UPDATE: 3rd February 2011

Further information on the Rev J. Hawkesworth is contained in "The Life and times of Selina, countess of Huntingdon: Volume 2" especially on page 188. From Wem in Shropshrie he moved to Fulneck in West Yorkshire. From this we've been able to identify two more of his children. Fulneck is not far from Hawksworth Hall in Hawksworth. He then moved to London before moving to Horsley in Gloucestershire where he is believed to have died in 1810.

Unfortunately all efforts to prove that John Salt and Ann Rose are indeed the parents of Thomas Salt have failed. A John Salt did marry an Ann Rose as stated above, and a Thomae Salt (c. 10 Nov 1720) and Johan Salt (c. 15 Dec 1717) were Christened in Butterton By Hulme End, Staffordshire of parents Johan Salt and Annae is also confirmed - see familysearch.org. However there is nothing to prove that John Salt and Johan Salt are one and the same, or that Thomae Salt is the Thomas Salt of Rugeley.

Both ourselves and Richard would be keen to hear from anyone with any additional information on this.

Thomas Salt was born in 1793 in Rugeley, Staffordshire, where his father was a solicitor. The family had strong links with Shropshire: Thomas Salt's mother was daughter of George Corser who was a banker and solicitor in Whitchurch, and his brother George, who seems to have been active in Wem, married a daughter of Creswell Tayleur of Great Bolas, another solicitor. [The George Salt that married Harriot Tayleur was not related to the Thomas Salt born in 1793 in Rugeley.] A sister married Edward Humphreys, a Shrewsbury surgeon.

In the 1820s Thomas Salt built No 6, Quarry Place and married Harriet Moultrie whose father was vicar of Cleobury Mortimer. Ten of their children survived infancy. One son joined the army in Bengal, and two others, George Moultrie Salt and William Salt, became partners in the firm.

On his father's death in 1864, George Moultrie Salt became head of the family. He became the father of twelve children. Of his eleven sons, three emigrated, and three joined the firm. Of these, Reginald Nowell Salt became de facto head of the family on his father's death in 1907, and his son Denis Hubert Salt was the last representative of the firm of Salt and Sons. He moved to the Isle of Man in the late 1990s.

Thomas Salt's other son to join the firm was William, who in 1858 married Edith Sutton. She was to become the head of the Sutton family, thereby controlling the family trust fund. The only son, Walter Sutton Salt, entered into partnership as a solicitor in Wem, but he died in 1911 at the age of 46.

The Salts were solicitors for many of the major landowning families in Shropshire and in some cases also acted as their agent or steward. Details...

The Powys County Archives Service holds the 'deposit from Salt & Sons, Solicitors of Shrewsbury; Montgomeryshire'.

Thomas Salt was the eldest son of a solicitor by the same name based in Rugeley, Staffordshire. In 1815 he was made a partner in the Shrewsbury firm of Pemberton, Coupland and Dukes. On the deaths of Robert Pemberton and William Coupland the partnership of Dukes & Salt remained in business until 1839, when Thomas Farmer Dukes retired. In 1845 Thomas Salt was joined in partnership by his son George Moultrie Salt, and later, by another son, William, and the firm was renamed Salt & Sons. More recently, the firm became Wace, Morgan and Salt. Details...

Durand - Major-General Sir Henry Marion, KCSI, CB - Royal Engineers - died 1st January 1871.

Son of Colonel Henry Percy, CB (14th Light Dragoons, Peninsula and Waterloo). Born 6th November 1812. Served Ghuzni 1839 (medal), Maharajpoor 1843 (star), Punjab 1848 (medal and 2 bars), Mutiny 1857 (medal and bar, CB). Married Emily Allnatt in 1859.

Asad Awan has kindly given us permission to use his photos of the tomb of Sir Henry Durand. The monument of Durand is located in the compound of St. Thomas's Church in the small town of Dera Ismail Khan in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan.

It reads: "Sacred to the memory of Henry Marion Durand Major General Royal Engineers C.B. K.C.S.I. Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab. born Novr 15th 1812 - died Jany 1st 1871. He entered the army in 1828 and after serving his country for forty years in the field and in the cabinet, was killed in the discharge of his duty, by a fall from an elephant at Tonk - N.W. Frontier."

Durand, Emily Augusta Allnatt, Lady – (1826 – 1905)
Emily Allnatt was the daughter of Charles Blake Allnatt, of Shrewsbury. Emily was married firstly to Rev. Henry Polehampton, whom she accompanied to India. Reverend and Mrs Polehampton were present during the siege of the British residency at Lucknow during the Mutiny (1857), where her husband eventually died after being hit by musket shot, and was evacuated to Allahabad. She then became the second wife (1859) of the noted civil servant and diplomat, Sir Henry Marion Durand (1812 – 1871), to whom she bore two daughters, Ethel Durand (1860 – 1933), married firstly James Sligo Jameson (died 1888), of Glen Lodge, Sligo, and secondly, Roberto, Conte di Villamarina (died 1916), and Muriel Durand (died 1933), who remained unmarried. The Dowager Lady Durand survived her second husband over three decades (1871 – 1905). She was stepmother to Sir Edward Law Durand, first baronet (1845 – 1920) and Sir Henry Mortimer Durand (1850 – 1924). Lady Durand died (March 30, 1905) aged seventy-eight.
